These tank cars represent the Narrow Frame UTLX cars that traversed the Denver and Rio Grande Western and Rio Grande Southern Railroad’s track throughout Colorado from the 1920s and into the 1960s. The narrow frame UTLX cars were built in the 1920s by using old standard gauge tank cars and mounting the tanks on steel channel framework. These cars were equipped with 4’ 8” archbar style trucks.

History
In late 1935, six UTLX narrow frame tank cars were sold to the Penn-Conley Tank Car Co. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, then a subsidiary of The Texas Company. Having been in service on the D&RGW since the mid-1920s, these "No Heater" cars were re-lettered CYCX and numbered 60 - 65. Leased back by The Texas Company (later known as TEXACO) from the Conley Company, they were used extensively on the D&RGW narrow gauge in Colorado to deliver gas to regional customers. As the second World War commenced, domestic gas rationing somewhat reduced the need for tank cars throughout the heartland of the country while creating a need for them at points where our national defense was focused. To that end, the CYCX cars disappeared from Colorado around 1942. Documentation for these cars’ final disposition is unclear, but it has been thoughtfully speculated that they were requisitioned by the US government for use in Hawaii for the remainder of the war years.
