HOn3 Narrow Frame and Frameless Tank Cars

Previous Releases

These tank cars represent the narrow frame and frameless UTLX cars that traversed the Denver and Rio Grande Western and Rio Grande Southern Railroad’s track throughout Colorado from the 1920s and into the 1960s. They were available in a variety of road numbers and paint schemes including Narrow Frame and Frameless, weathered and non-weathered versions.

The narrow frame UTLX cars were built in the 1920s by using old standard gauge tank cars and mounting the tanks on steel channel framework. These cars were equipped with 4’ 8” archbar style trucks.

The UTLX frameless tank cars are well known as the “GRAMPS” cars. Originally built from former standard gauge cars in the early 1930s, many of this class had the prominent silver letters emblazoned across the sides of the tank cars around 1939 while transporting oil from Chama NM, to the Alamosa CO, refinery.

We produced two Frameless Tank Car numbers featuring the UTLX yellow lettering as well as the "GRAMPS" logo (Nos. 55227 and 55140). Both road numbers were available both weathered and non-weathered. A Painted, Unlettered version was available only as a non-weathered car.
